The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” the nation from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the implication is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was in essence a casting call with many candidates. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state de facto.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to examine.
