Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
