Iran Claims Attack on American Facility in Bahrain, During Regional Military Operations.
Iran's military claims to have hit a US naval base in Manama, as the country executed strikes throughout the Middle East in response for a large-scale and continuing assault targeting the nation by the US and Israel.
Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an area near the headquarters of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The full scale of any damage is unclear and the US has not commented.
Missile Defenses Activated
Elsewhere across the region, the United Arab Emirates, the State of Qatar and the State of Kuwait - all home to American military installations - stated they have intercepted missiles in their air space.
In Doha, the Qatari Ministry of Defence announced it had intercepted a number of projectiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the region.
Iran's Declared Retaliation
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement it was targeting American facilities and interests as part of operation "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the attack on the Islamic Republic carried out by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday.
That preceding assault - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far focused on sites associated with the the regime, with US President Donald Trump urging the people of Iran to rise up against the leadership.
Wider Impacts
In the State of Israel, air raid sirens sounded nationwide after the Israeli military stated it had identified an incoming Iranian missile barrage.
The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates announced that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"Emirati air defenses dealt with the projectiles with high efficiency and destroyed a number of missiles," it added.
The statement noted wreckage fell on a residential area in the capital, causing some material damage and fatalities.
The United States Air Force is stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the Emirati Air Force.
