Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
