Norris Edges Out Piastri in Brazilian Practice Session
The British driver has beaten his teammate at all of the previous five grands prix.
The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Norris, who seized the championship lead from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds.
Before then, Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before sprint qualifying scheduled for 18:30 GMT.
The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, lying 36 points behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme.
His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, though minor, when he rotated at the fourth corner during the early running.
The Japanese lost control over the exit kerbs before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to escape with just a light touch of the wall.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the practice, rotating twice through the fast downhill corner approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight.
The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver.
Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, over half a second off Piastri's best.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
