Britain's top artificial intelligence institute has announced a new mission to help protect the nation from online assaults targeting essential systems including energy, transportation and public services.

The Alan Turing Institute will carry out a innovation program specifically created to defend the nation from adversarial risks, according to a recent announcement.
This strategic shift follows major restructuring at the state-funded body, including the departure of its previous CEO last month after both workforce dissatisfaction and government pressure for major restructuring.
Growing Cybersecurity Concerns
The new mission comes amid increasing worry about Britain's vulnerability to internet outages and cyber-attacks.
Recent incidents have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a major outage affecting global cloud computing and recent cyber-attacks that halted manufacturing at significant plants and distribution networks across multiple companies.
Guidance and Direction
A previous senior officer of the the nation's space operations center will deliver recommendations next month on how the publicly-supported center can best support the scope of official artificial intelligence goals in defense, homeland protection and information gathering.
Organizational Refocusing
The institute's chair, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that nearly eighty separate studies at the center employing hundreds have been closed, transferred out or completed because they do not align with the revised strategy.
Organizational Difficulties
The center has faced workplace difficulties since last year as staff protested against reforms, culminating in a team of staff members registering an official concern to the appropriate oversight organization.
