UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
